San Diego roofing styles: tile, shingles and low-slope systems
Compare curved and flat tile profiles, composition shingles and low-slope roof systems using a supplied sample display and San Diego references.
San Diego roof planning commonly involves several different assemblies. Clay and concrete tiles appear in curved and flat profiles; composition shingles cover many pitched roofs; low-slope buildings use membrane or built-up systems. Metal is another project-specific option. These are useful local roof families, not a measured ranking or a claim that one material suits every property.

Recognize the profile, then identify the product
A curved S-profile and a two-piece barrel or mission arrangement can create different roof shapes. Flat-profile tiles can have smoother faces or textures resembling shake or slate. Appearance alone does not establish whether a piece is clay or concrete, its manufacturer, fastening detail, weight, compatibility or availability. Preserve a spare tile or product marking when it can be collected safely by the contractor.
| Roof family | What to compare |
|---|---|
| Clay or concrete tile | Profile, replacement compatibility, underlayment, flashing, fastening, roof capacity and access. |
| Composition shingles | Existing layers, deck condition, underlayment, ventilation, edges and flashing integration. |
| Low-slope membrane or built-up roofing | Material identification, seam or ply system, drainage, penetrations, insulation and repair compatibility. |
| Metal roofing options | Panel/profile system, movement, attachment, penetrations, transitions and suitability for the actual building. |
Choose an assembly rather than a color alone
The roof covering is one layer. A reroof decision also needs the deck, underlayment or membrane, flashings, edges, drainage, ventilation and any equipment or solar work addressed. Historic wood shingles may be visible in local architectural photographs; that does not make them a current reroof recommendation. Confirm current requirements with the property's actual permitting authority and the product installation instructions.
